Gov. Pat Quinn has called for a special legislative session on August 17, pressuring lawmakers to “enact comprehensive pension reform.” House Speaker Mike Madigan has said he will call a pension bill for a vote that day. Possible bills for consideration are HB 1447, which passed the Senate in May, or two similar new bills, HB 6209 and HB 6210, sponsored by Rep. Elaine Nekritz. Quinn continues to support legislation like HB 1447, which would force participants in the systems to choose between receiving health insurance OR the current compounded Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) upon retirement.

Participate in the IFT’s “Week of Action” beginning next Monday, August 13 to fight any unfair pension bills! The IFT and our partners in the We Are One Illinois coalition are planning a week-long series of member actions next week to tell lawmakers to oppose HB 1447 and other pension-slashing legislation. The week will culminate with a rally at the State Capitol in Springfield on Friday, August 17. Please plan to attend to make sure lawmakers hear our message loud and clear!
Watch your inbox this Monday for a special e-mail detailing the actions you can take throughout the week, as well as additional information about the rally on Friday, August 17 in Springfield. More information will also be posted on the IFT Web site as it becomes available. STAY TUNED!
