The Moraine Valley Faculty Association stands against any kind of police brutality, and we stand against systemic racism in our society.  We find the death of George Floyd to be very disturbing. We support justice being served against those responsible and share the outrage of the people around the world pointing out the damage caused by racism in our communities.

We want our students and the residents of our community to know that we stand against racism. We recognize that our systems of government, including our educational systems, need to do better in terms of fighting racism and ensuring equity. We support the statements of the Cook County College Teachers Union, the Illinois Federation of Teachers, and the American Federation of Teachers.

For over twenty years our faculty have been leaders in discussions of diversity on our campus, and, more recently, they have been active in discussions of equity at Moraine Valley. We believe that the larger community college mission of open-access education is one of the great equalizing forces in the history of our country. As a union, we believe that community colleges are an important part of the fight for equality and justice in our nation.

We pledge to move beyond good intentions and work toward actions that make a difference. We pledge to support the efforts focused on equity on our campus and to partner with the administration and our board of trustees to combat racism on our campus and in our community.

As always, we are one union with 209 voices. Let’s make sure all of our voices are part of this important discussion leading to new solutions.
