Unfortunately, we have reached “silly season” (to borrow a phrase from Barack Obama) for the county-wide union election for Local 1600.
Recently, many of our faculty members received an email making claims about levels of pay for Cook County College Teachers’ Union staff members. This email is not only inaccurate, but it is an inappropriate email to our members. We wanted to share a couple of thoughts about this email and give our members a heads up.
First off, it is not appropriate to send campaign emails to faculty members’ MVCC email addresses. These accounts are provided by Moraine Valley for work purposes. Campaign emails should be sent to personal accounts.
Second, the claims made in the email are off the mark. We do not need to consult our political scientists to see what they are trying to do. They claim that there is some “scandal” when the pay of CCCTU staff members are directed by the current 1600 leadership and approved by the House of Reps. The email lumps together all kinds of benefits in an effort to try to make pay levels seem shocking and controversial. They are trying to link the current CCCTU leadership to the EDU1600 Caucus using exaggerated claims and half-truths.
Odds are that silly season will get even sillier as the election approaches. This email will probably NOT be the last email of its kind. More will probably pop up.
